This paper gives an account of the earlier days of computing, and promising technology that succumbed to the social and political pressures of the time.

From the article: Ferranti Canada's efforts to launch an indigenous computer industry, with itself at the centre, and the eventual collapse of this dream, is a more complex story than the usual versions which speak of great ideas lost to an unresponsive society. The present paper gives an account of Ferranti Canada's involvement in the beginnings of a Canadian electronics industry in the twenty years, or so, following the end of the Second World War against the background of the influence of world events on the Canadian political, military, and industrial scene.
