Dr. Roel Vertegaal

Dr. Roel Vertegaal is Associate Professor in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and director of the Human Media Laboratory. He is also CTO of Xuuk, Inc., a startup that develops attention sensors for interactive, real-world viewing statistics gathering. Roel's first degree is in Electronic Music from Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands. He did an MSc in Computing in Britain, studied design in The Hague, and holds a PhD in HCI from Twente University. Roel is one of the world's experts on eye communication between humans, and between humans and technology. He received the Premier of Ontario's Research Excellence Award for his work on Attentive User Interfaces (AUI) [Google TechTalk], which was featured in media across the globe, from Good Morning America to Scientific American. Roel helped create the first North-American conference on Eye Tracking (ACM ETRA), established alt.chi as the alternative papers venue at the annual ACM SIGCHI conference and advised the National Academy of Sciences. His current interest is in Organic User Interfaces.

“in the near future, a computer will have any shape or form, and flexible computer displays will start appearing on any product of any form. projecting and tracking objects is just the beginning. these organic user interfaces will be completely embedded in real world interactions.”

Audrey Girouard, postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Audrey Girouard's main research focuses on next-generation interfaces that fit in the organic user interfaces and reality based interactions framework. She obtained her PhD from Tufts University in 2010 working with Robert Jacob, focusing on adaptive passive brain-computer interfaces for healthy users using non-invasive technology. Audrey was a visiting researcher in the InSitu group at INRIA/Universite de Paris-Sud in 2008. She received her undergraduate degree in software engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal, Canada. Audrey co-organized workshops at CHI’2006 and CHI’2010, on reality based interactions as well as brain and physiological computing. She reviews for conferences and journals such as ACM CHI, UIST, TEI, Interact, and TOCHI. She is a Junior Engineer with the Order of Professional Engineers of Quebec (OIQ). See her website at:

Kibum Kim, postdoctoral Fellow

Kibum Kim was a senior software engineer/human interaction researcher in the Applied Research Center at Motorola before joining the HML at Queen’s University in June 2010. He received his Ph.D. from the Center for Human Computer Interaction at Virginia Tech, where he worked with Prof. Tatar and Prof. Harrison in the Pragmatics of Education/Emotional Computing (POET) Research Lab. He was a Ph.d student of Dr. Carroll and Dr. Rosson at Virginia Tech, before they moved to PSU.

For his dissertation, he has conducted research in the areas of human-computer interaction (HCI) and computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) as well as computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), which investigates computer-mediated communications (as with Handheld computers and Tablet PCs). At Motorola, he used Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques for the Topic Detection project. Currently, he is working for the flexible display project with Dr. Vertegaal.

Jesse Burstyn

Jesse Burstyn is a MSc student at HML

Aneesh Tarun

Aneesh Tarun is a PhD student starting Sept. 2010. He obtained his Master's in HCI at Georgia Tech, and his undegraduate degree at Visvesvahariah Tech in India.

Laurie Lallemand

Laurie Lallemand is a PhD student starting in Sept 2010. She obtained her undergraduate degree at one of the Grande Ecoles in Paris, France, and her Master's at the University of Stuttgart.

John Bolton

john is a masters student at the hml. he is currently investigating how multi-touch devices of different shapes and sizes can provide interesting and unique interaction possibilities.

Chris Perez

ChrisChris is a masters student in the Human Media Lab. He completed his undergrad at Queen's University in Computing. He is currently working on the design and implementation of an interactive table for the Human Media Lab's new space that maintains both private and public workareas for use in conference rooms.

Amartya Banerjee

amartya is a masters student at the hml.  he is working on remote interaction technologies that are user-friendly and closely resemble the way human beings interact with the physical world.

Andreas Hollatz

Tré is our regular hardware geek. When not busy hacking iPhone protectors into semi-useful input devices, he's trying to trick Philips Lumalive e-textiles into behaving.
